Žrnovo Beaches

Pavja Luka, Zrnovo - beach

As Žrnovo is a village that is situated about 2 km from the seashore, there is no immediate beach you can go to while visiting the village. You would need to walk, cycle, take a short bus ride or drive to the nearest beach. The seashore is still easily accessible as there are numerous paths, small roads and lanes to reach some really nice bits of the coast.

Here is a list of my favourite beaches in the near vicinity of the village:

Žrnovska Banja:

Situated just 20 min easy downhill walk from the village, 2 km away, this is the favourite local beach to go to any time of day. The beach is situated along the shores of the beautiful bay with plenty of houses and several cafes that offer hot and cold drinks and snacks. It features a couple of stretches of pebbles as well as some rocky bits. You can easily walk to this one by the narrow road leading from Prvo Selo hamlet down to the North coast. Getting back is a bit harder (uphill!) but still easy to do if you take it slowly in the late afternoon when the sun is already down and the temperature is a bit cooler.

  • Good for: Children, Family, Easy access, Disabled access
  • Parking: There are several parking spots to park your car. It shouldn’t be hard to find a place, but still, try to come early in a day
  • Public transport: Not direct buses from the village, you have to get one from Korcula town.
  • GPS coordinates: 42.958690, 17.111882

Vrbovica:

Situated in the deep bay about 2.8 km from the village, Vrbovica is a sheltered spot, facing the North part of the Croatian coast. The sea here is mostly calm, especially near the shores, while the waters are clean and transparent. A couple of small cafes are also here so it is easy to get a cold drink or ice cream. In the furthermost corner of the bay, there is a small campsite so you can also camp here if you wish. For this one, you need some kind of transportation as it is a bit further away from the village but still walkable.

  • Good for: children, family, windsurfing beginners, snorkeling, easy access, disabled access
  • Parking: There are several parking spots to park your car in the vicinity, however, in the summer I found it hard to find a parking place. Try to come early in the day.
  • Public transport: Not direct buses from the village, you have to get one from Korcula town.

Pebbles on the Beach

Oštri Rat:

Another lovely bay in the vicinity, just down the hill from Žrnovo at a distance of about 3.6 km from the village. This is a nice pebble beach located in the bay facing the Northside. Easily approached by foot, the water here is clear and clean with magical colors and almost always very calm as it is sheltered in the bay.  No facilities in the vicinity, so bring your own supplies.

  • Good for: Children, Family, snorkeling, windsurfing beginners, fairly easy access, no disabled access
  • Parking: Along the tarmac lane you will find several parking spots to park your car. I never had any problems with finding a parking place there. In July and August try to be here earlier to avoid parking problems.
  • Public transport: Again, no direct buses from the village, take one from Korcula town or take a taxi
  • GPS coordinates: 42.963788, 17.097250

Tri Žala:

Stretches of three small pebbly beaches just about 4 km away from the village. You can get there by car in just about 5 minutes. This is my favorite beach for afternoon shade on very hot days. Due to its location, the sun drops here at around 4 pm so you can enjoy nice and cool pebbles while swimming or snorkeling in clean and clear waters.

  • Good for: Children, Family, snorkeling, afternoon shade, fairly easy access, no disabled access
  • Parking: Along the road to Racisce you will find several parking spots to park your car, however, I always have difficulties finding a parking place there. Try to come by scooter or cycle. For me, it seems a much easier solution than finding a parking place. A road to Racisce can get pretty busy in July and August so it is not pleasurable to walk along. If you walk, make sure you keep away from traffic.
  • Public transport: No direct buses from the village, take one from Korcula town.
  • GPS coordinates: 42.965290, 17.089232
Sunset in Orlanduša, Zrnovo

Orlanduša:

This beach is fairly easily accessible by car along the tarmac road, about 7 km away from the village. A lovely stretch of pebbles in the corner of the bay with rocky borders ideal for jumping into the water. As the bay is remote and faces open seas, there is an abundance of underwater life here at any time of year. A perfect place for a relaxing day out.

  • Good for: Solo people who like outdoors, snorkeling, fishing with a rod, morning shade, fairly easy access, no disabled access
  • Parking: Park your car along the tarmac road above the bay about 200 meters walking distance from the beach and shore. I never had any difficulties finding parking here.
  • Public transport: None. A remote place, middle of nowhere.
  • GPS coordinates: 42.915909, 17.083745
Views of Pavja Bay and beach

Pavja Luka:

The beach is located about 6.5 km away from the Postrana hamlet in Žrnovo. It is not easy to reach the beach and that is exactly one of the reasons why this beach is rarely busy. Every time I go there, there are just a few people around. Most of the time it’s actually only me (and my friends). The pebble beach is located in the deep bay and to reach it you have to walk downhill along the narrow wooded path. Make sure you take your walking shoes with you, this beach is not for flip-flops!

  • Good for: Solo people or group of friends who likes outdoors, snorkeling, fishing with a rod, difficult access, no disabled access
  • Parking: You park on the road above the bay, then walk down the hill for about 15 minutes. Getting back is harder as it is a steep hill. I never had any difficulties finding parking here.
  • Public transport: None. A remote place, middle of nowhere.
  • GPS coordinates: 42.912394, 17.103472

So, these are my favorite beaches in the vicinity of Žrnovo – I hope you will enjoy spending some time on some of the beaches near the village. To explore it further, you can also visit beaches in Lumbarda, which is situated about 7 km away from the village (see info here), or ones around Korcula Town and further along the Island (see info here). If you have more info or comments about the beaches I mentioned or indeed some other ones to recommend, let me know –  I will be pleased to hear from you (contact)
